Too Much?
After being published in 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) has received heated criticism. One of the many critics focuses on the fact that DSM-5 contains considerably more disorders than the original DSM published in 1952. Many of the newly added diseases are arguably normal reactions to unfavorable situations. For example, people can be diagnosed with major depressive disorder after being extremely sad for two weeks after a loved one passed away, according to DMS-5. Others criticize DSM-for its view of mental illness as a mere brain disease. But is it?
