Recall Details
Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 14, 2026 — Shining Sea Fish Co. of Detroit has recalled its Ma Cohen’s Kippered Herring catch-weight packages after routine testing found uneviscerated fish longer than five inches, creating a risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause life‑threatening botulism. Consumers are warned to stop using the product immediately and not to eat it, even if it appears or smells normal. No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall covers Ma Cohen’s Kippered Herring with the following lot code(s): LOT 25079 (expiration May 03, 2026), LOT 25055 (expiration May 12, 2026), LOT 25028 (expiration June 03, 2026) and LOT 26344 (expiration July 22, 2026). The product has been sold online and at select U.S. retailers, including grocery stores in Michigan, Minnesota and North Dakota, and have been sold since Sept. 15, 2025. Packages are clear plastic with a foil label showing the product name and lot code(s); expiration dates may appear on the back of the package or on store-added stickers alongside the catch weight.
Consumers who purchased any of the recalled packages should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of them safely; do not dispose in a way that could expose others to the product. For questions or to request a refund or replacement, contact Shining Sea Fish Co. Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. EST at 1-313-542-2637 or email [email protected]. If you experience symptoms consistent with botulism—such as weakness, double vision, difficulty speaking or breathing—seek immediate medical attention.
