Buy frozen produce
Frozen produce are usually cheaper because they last longer than their fresh counterparts. Especially in winter, fresh produce at a reasonable price can be limited. According to a paper published by The American Frozen Food Institute (1), a meal plan consists of 95% of frozen Food costs $8.52 for a person per day ($59.66 per week).
You might be concerned that frozen veggies are so cheap because blanching before freezing reduces their nutrient content. Such practice is common in preparing frozen veggies for hygiene. But one study has discredited such concern (2). In fact, frozen produce are often denser in nutrients than their fresh counterparts. That is because they are picked and packaged at their peak ripeness. Such practice also accounts for the extra sweetness in frozen fruits.
Blanched veggies take less time to cook. They are ready to use in casseroles, stir-fries, pasta, and soups. Frozen fruits can be used in smoothies, oatmeal, baking. You can also eat them right out of the freezer as frozen candy or thaw them.
