Turkey is from Turkey?
Are turkey the bird and Turkey the country just a coincidence? Though there are many theories regarding the connection, the English word for the avian creature did come from Turkish merchants in the 15th and 16th centuries. One theorist prosed that Turks from the Roman Empire sold wild fowls from West Africa to the European market. Eventually, the British referred to the species as "turkey", short for "turkey cock". When the British arrived in the New World, they mistook the local wildfowl for "turkey" because of their similar looks.
