Crucial for survival

Salt is the main source of sodium and chloride in the human diet. We can't function without sodium. It's crucial for conducting nerve pulses, maintaining body fluid balance, and contracting and relaxing muscle fiber. Neither can we live without chloride. It is an essential component in stomach acid and blood pH regulation.

It's not just humans. All animals need salt to survive. But not all of them absorb salt from meat and seafood as we do, and none of them would sprinkle a dash of salt into their food. Instead, they are great at finding natural mineral deposits (salt licks) and...lick these as if they were the salty survival lollipop. As for farm animals, well, they are given salt blocks.

Okay…Salt is important, so why do we need to cut back on it?
